The Artists of the year articles are a LOOKSLIKEFILM tradition for more than four years now. It is a series where we feature the work of the best photographers from our Facebook community. Their work received a lot of attention in our group and encouraged many of the 55.000 community members to show their love for the photo by giving it a ‘like.’

A great achievement

These images you see here and in our other Artists of the Year blog posts (the wedding portraits one for example), made it into the famous #LLF1000CLUB. It simply means that a photographer’s photo received at least one thousand Facebook likes in our group. Another LOOKSLIKEFILM Photography challenge in our Facebook group is over. We scrolled through all the fantastic images that have been submitted, and we fell in love with so so many photos. Hence, we decided to wrap up a little blog post and show you some of these gems. As you’ve already read in the title of this blog post, the topic of last week’s challenge was #bwportrait.

The black and white portrait challenge

We asked our talented community to share with us their photos edited completely in black and white.  Photographers from every field of photography have had the chance to submit their images, so you are going to see wedding, kids, boudoir, and birth photos in this blog post. The additional restriction we created for this challenge: There has to be only one human being visible in the photo!

FaceTime Live Photos by Tim Dunk

Tim Dunk: “Like the rest of the world, the COVID-19 virus hit and I was left stuck at home with no real way of safely doing the thing I love doing. This has had its financial impact, of course, but it also left me in a place where my options to get creative, socialize, or just hang out with people making images together, was suddenly reduced to zero. We are privileged in the UK to live in homes with a thousand ways to communicate around us, and I started to think around ways I could effectively make portraits of my friends, and keep my brain stimulated.

The idea

I put a shout out to some friends to see if anyone was up for trying to use the fairly basic imaging capabilities of FaceTime, initially just as a fun experiment, and a way of collaborating with my creative mates around the world. The restrictions of the technology I’ve been using (FaceTime, an iPhone, and my normal editing software), kind of propelled us to be more thoughtful in our approach, and made working with the more basic capabilities than I am used to, kind of the mother of invention. Partners were employed as lighting stands, tripods, subjects, and props. Phones were balanced on precarious Jenga-towers of random stuff or blu-tacked to walls. These self-isolation spaces were searched for pockets of light and color, mood & humor. I’ve shot in lounges and wardrobes and poly tunnels, allotments, and staircases. Props were pulled from shelves and cupboards, or cat beds and cribs. I’ve shot people living within shouting distance and stayed up way past my bedtime shooting people on the other side of the world.

The vibes of the shoots

The shoots were fast & fun, locked into a short time frame and a similar visual language. They involved couples, individuals, children & pets. All of us in the same situations. All of us shut away. At any time this would have been fun – as a creative exercise and way of finding a new way of making portraits; but in this bizarre time we find ourselves, outside of our normal experience or comprehension, it made total sense that we made pictures in a new way too. The fact that it sparked such enthusiasm in people, resonated with them at a time where we are distanced from each other, from the world, is just bloody lovely as a human being. These images feel like tiny threads from one home to the next, waiting to be pulled again.”
